The Campus of Davis & Elkins College

Outstanding views of the Appalachian Mountains grace the Davis & Elkins College campus. Flowering shrubs and trees grow in abundance around the halls and along the walks and roads, and natural, wooded areas lie adjacent to the campus. Sited on hills and wooded glens, the campus is a walkable community that lies within blocks of downtown Elkins.

The College occupies the former summer estates of early-20th-century senators Henry Davis and Stephen Elkins and incorporates their elegant Victorian mansions. We enjoy a rich mix of historic and modern buildings, with most clustered together on the front campus on a ridge overlooking the city of Elkins. Other buildings lie on the north section of the campus, stretching to the athletic fields. The Davis & Elkins Historic District was established in 1996 by the U.S. Department of the Interior. It includes the original Davis and Elkins summer homes, Halliehurst and Graceland, both named for family members. Graceland is part of the Robert C. Byrd Center for Hospitality & Tourism and is now an elegant on-campus inn, staffed by students from the College's hospitality management program.

D&E's 1300-seat Harper-McNeeley Auditorium is the region's largest performance hall. The Boiler House Theatre provides two performance spaces and set building facilities in support of the College's Theatre Deparment, while gallery space for the visual arts is found in several buildings on campus.

There are five residence halls on campus which include two coed dormitories. Booth Library, opened in 1992, is the physical and intellectual center of the College. It is a state-of-the-art building designed to support the information needs of the college community. It has a capacity to house 300,000 volumes, 450,000 microforms, and 8,500 pieces of nonprint material.

Leisure activities take place in the Ice House, outdoor pavilion, Madden Student Center and the Memorial Gymnasium. Liberal Arts Hall, Charles E. Albert Hall, Hermanson Center and Eshleman Science Center are used primarily for classes.
